Bean Hot Dogs?

It's dinner time at my house and as usual the hubby isn't home. We've been married for 15 years and I'm sure we've had dinner more times without him then we have with him. Before we had kids I used to fix dinner and hunt him down at the university and we would have dinner together. Well, that is when I wasn't working as well. Now he has a job that I can't really hunt him down at and I definitely couldn't go in to his office and have a meal. I've only ever been past the revolving door - who knows what is beyond that long hallway.

Anyway, back to dinner time. Because he is rarely home for dinner it seems lately I've rarely been cooking. When I do cook it is definitely child friendly - like last night. This is when I make chili dogs but the boys don't like chili and the girl doesn't like hot dogs. That doesn't sound child friendly at all now does it? So dinner ends up with the boys eating hotdogs and Jordan eating a "bean hot dog" which is just chili in a hot dog bun. I get lazy and sit at the computer and eat and eventually hubby wanders in and heats up some leftover chili dogs.

I have friends who would "never put up with this" and insist that their husbands come home for dinner. I suppose after 15 years I've just grown accustomed to the way it is. I do need to get out of the rut though and start cooking again. But with our schedule when am I going to fit it in:
Monday: Wolf Scouts every other week
Tuesday: Faith in God activity day every other week
Wednesday:
Thursday: Scouts & Ballet
Friday: Daisy's every other week and well it's Friday who wants to cook?? I won't even mention I just signed the boys up for basketball and so that will add a practice in once a week as well.

You sound over scheduled? You can certainly pull out the crock pot, right? Saves my butt at least three times a week.

We try to eat together as much as possible, but since my DH travels, there are usually a couple nights a week when we can't. On those nights, we eat fun, easy "kid oriented" foods like mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, peanut butter & jelly.... When daddy is home, I try out new recipes more adult oriented meals. It works well, the kids get to have their favorites that daddy doesn't care for and I have easy cooking nights when DH isn't home. When he is, the kids learn to eat regular grown up meals too.

Ooooooooh, Chili dogs. NOw that does sound like something easy to make on a Friday night. Jordan doesn't like hot dogs? I didn't either for a long time, and I really only like the ALL beef ones.

Growing up, my dad was always there for dinner, but my mom didn't work.
In our family, when I was working, I'd eat with the kids, and my husband came home from his job, and then I went to mine.
Now, I cook and call him to either come home for dinner (if he's doing something for his business), or if he's working on a woodproject for someone, he'll come when he can stop and come in which could be hours later. So we do have a meal together every once in awhile, but not as often as I'd like.

Have a great weekend!

We rarely eat at the same time either. Ugghhh. Jon works nights so it doesn't really work but somedays I wish we were the kind of family that sits around the table and talks about our day between bites, but we're not. We spend weird karaoke-at-1-a.m. time that most families don't to make up for it I guess.

By the way, I have the best ever, easiest Chili recipe that even my kids will eat if you ever have a hankering. It seriously tastes like you slaved all day and takes about ten minutes.

When were were in Japan, we rarely eat dinner together because my husband works until late at night. It's just the tot and me.

My mother inlaw came to visit one day and insisted we WAIT for the hubby to come home. I told her, "Why? All the pots and pans and plates are not with him." She just stared at me in disbelief. I mean how could I starve my daughter (and most importantly, myself hee hee) just to have dinner together?
