What's Your Motivation?

We were cleaning the house today because our landlord is selling the place and someone was coming to look at it. This was a family job but I figured I would give the children some motivation. We have just started paying the children for a few small chores now and then so I thought that might help today. I told Jared if he wanted his allowance then he needed to get cleaning. He went upstairs and while he was cleaning up the bathroom I heard him ask Jackson "what's an allowance?" I found it pretty funny he was willing to do his job in hopes of receiving an "allowance" when he didn't even know what that was. I should have hurried upstairs and told him it was a box of rocks - but with that boy that would probably be better than money.

So, topic of the day - do you give your kids an allowance? Are there chores involved? My sister in law's children all have jobs -chores - around the house. They are not given an allowance but if they need money for anything the chore chart is looked at and then the money for the activity is given. My brother in law gives an allowance every week. The children stand in line with their hands out waiting for the cash yet I have never seen them lift a finger. What do you do?

My son gets a weekly allowance that is not tied to chores. I feel that chores need to be done irregardless of the possibility of financial reward - he's a part of the family, and everyone in the family must share the work (at a reasonable, age-appropriate level of course). We give him an allowance because part of our job as parents is to support him, and in all honesty because I was tired of the incessant requests to buy this that and the other thing. Now all that little stuff that I don't want to be constantly buying (trading cards, etc.) he buys himself, or saves up if he wants something bigger. It's taught him a great deal about money and how to manage it.

It's not everyone's approach, but it works for us :).

my kids get allowance that's tied to small chores. they receive there money once a month. none of the kids have cleaned their rooms in the last month or two (they're a lazy bunch), therefore, have gotten no money. my stepson has had no allowance for about 4 months, because the other two months were taken away because he was texting and other things on his cell phone. the kids are not allowed to use any of the features like texting or internet.

btw...happy mother's day! i know you get to celebrate it twice. lol

Our kids get a monthly allowance that is not tied to chores. They do chores and help out around the house just because they are members of the family and it is their house, too. Of course, they complain regularly! LOL The allowance is just to give them the chance to have some practice and saving up for something they really want.

We pay our kids for some "optional" chores that put on their chore chart each month. Basically, they have chores they get paid for, and others they have to complete just because they are part of the family. We tried using payjr last year and found that good old paper chore charts work the best so we print them for free at chorecharts.com

My daughter is still 4 so this is not an issue for us yet but when I was growing up in my parent's house, (there were 6 of us), we each had our own share of chores without the allowance. My father put his feet down saying because we are living under one room, everyone has to do their part to make it a better place (cleaner). ;-)

Well, I do give my husband an allowance each payday...it is the least I can do since he is actually the one that earned it. Even when he doesn't do his chores around the house. Wait...he doesn't HAVE chores around the house.

Regardless, I always struggled with the allowance/chore thing. I think they should have regular jobs and maybe earn money doing above and beyond. I like them earning or saving their money for their purhases, but since I'm a grammie, I usually just spoil them anyway. What I am sayig is, I have absolutely no advice for you on this issue....I just wanted to chat. Oh wait, I do pay my kiddos 5 cents a piece for snails. They have to hunt them down, pick them up and depose of them in the garbage. It's a tough job but someone has to do it!

My children are older and have jobs so there are no more allowance but when they were smaller? We would give an allowance but it was not tied to any chores as it was mandatory everyone helped around the house. If they didn't pull their own weight, there were consequences. It was a small allowance...I believe it was half their age at the time...and they could do with it as they pleased. Into their teens we gave them an allowance large enough to look after their clothes, school supplies, personals, etc., and they were to budget and look after those things themselves. It was a great way to teach them how to manage their money and to this day, they are very good with their money so hopefully it helped them a bit.

I work from home. When I am motivated and work a lot I get a good check. When I am a slacker I get a cruddy check. Allowance is like that in our house. The kids know what gets them cash and if they do it, they get it. I'm pretending it teaches responsibility, but I don't know. I am so LAME at this parenting thing sometimes!!!

My kids all have chores, but we do not give allowance (only because I found I never kept up with it). We do give our kids money to help with extra work around the yard and such - like washing the car. We also give our kids money for good report cards (one of the best things we have done - it does encourage good grades!).

Nice to see you today - it's been a while. Hope you are well. Take care and have a good weekend - Kellan

I feel the same way as Robin, I like the kids to feel like as part of the family we all need to pitch in. I've started back to work PT, and will be giving Marissa $25 a week, if she helps my husband help with watching her brother and sisters, and then help me with getting the dinner dishes in the dishwasher.
With Josh and Katelyn if they keep their rooms clean, I'll take them and let them pick out a toy, about once a month, or to have a special treat at McDonalds.

It's really hard for me to keep up with a chore list, and if the kids what something like a video game, I have some extra chores like helping pickup the outside or cleaning mirrors or emptying out the bathroom trascans, and have them save up their money, which can be hard, because Josh feels like he has a hole burning in his pocket.
