Randomness

I tagged myself to share 8 random facts or habits after reading Baby Tea Leaves blog this morning. I was hoping she would have something to start my brain blogging this morning - and she did.

1. I set my alarm clock each night and then turn it off and back on just to make sure. I've also been known to get OUT of bed to then check it a 3rd time.

2. I will use the same cup for drinking water several days in a row. When I use a glass I use it less than a plastic cup - the fingerprints get to me. I'm currently back to giant iced tea cups of water.

3. I have to get up and showered and dressed before I take my kids to school. I don't even wear make-up (aside from mascara) so that's not the issue - I just don't like leaving the house and then having to come back and get ready later.

4. I like to dance. If we go to a party with dancing I dance. My husband doesn't dance so he sits and socializes with his friends - I dance.

5. This one is related to the dancing. I have been known to catch a ride home with someone else when attending a party because my husband has gone home- I am a closer. Yep - I'm well known for being part of the last group to leave. In England I was most often the designated driver as well - so I would stay and then drive everyone home. I bet they miss me!

6. I have superstitions when I bowl. I used to bowl in the morning so if I had toast with grape jelly and bowled a good game I would eat that in hopes to relive the game. Lately I bowl at night so it's fries and a coke.

7. I can not quit drinking coke. Seriously! I don't have it at home but if I am out I will order one, or two, or three. I can NOT drink diet.

8. I collect Thimbles. It makes me feel like an old lady but they are SO easy to pick up and carry - they don't take up any room in your suitcase - and they are usually inexpensive. I also don't HAVE to go to the place to collect the thimble - I take donations from the places my friends/family have been. Hint, hint!

OK so here are the rules.
Each player starts with eight random fact/habits about themselves.
People who are tagged need to write on their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
At the end of your blog post, you need to choose people to get tagged and list their name - (and here's where I personally break the rules. I tag everyone.)
Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged and to read your blog.

What color are your walls? Most of them are yellow - they were like this when we moved in. Various shades - not all the same yellow in every room. The other rooms are white.

Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home? Nope. But with the trail of toys my kids leave on the floor a burglar would be hard pressed to make it through the house quietly.

What does your home smell like right now? Nothing.

Favorite candle scent? Vanilla, home sweet home, oh I don't know - I'm not a big candle person - that's why my house doesn't smell like anything.

Is there a smoke detector in your home? Yes.

In case of fire, what are the items in your house which you’d grab if you only could make one quick trip? I would have dh grab our passports and the harddrive because that's where the rest of the pictures are.

-I used to have 2 comments but I couldn't figure out how to delete the 3rd - some spam insane comment going on so I just deleted the whole thing and reposted.

High School Meme

Found this meme that I liked- about high school over at Constant Growing Amazement. Since I tend to do meme's on the weekend I figured this was a good one for today.

Who was your best friend?
I had several best friends during highschool. Barbara W. was my first best friend. We did everything together until a boy came between us. Not that a boy means your friendship is over but he really drug her down - with an emphasis on the drug part. Her parents pulled her out of extracurricular activities as punishment for her actions - without realizing that eliminating her reasons for coming to school would cause her to drop out. I googled her name not long ago and actually found her name along with a rock band that appeared to be focused on writing songs about Satan. After Barbara I hung out with Cameo and then Stefani. Both girls that I still keep in contact with. Not on a daily - or even monthly basis - but we do keep eachother informed of our lives.

What kind of car did you drive?
My first car was a 1972 Datsun B110. My brother drove it first but when he went to Ricks it became mine. Since it was actually my Dad's car he would use it against me - if I didn't do well in school or skipped a class now and then he would take the car away. I finally decided I had had enough of that and bought my OWN car. A 1978 Datsun Pickup. It was Red and I drove it for almost 10 years - until I had my 2nd child and I couldn't put 2 carseats in the truck.

It's Friday night. Where were you?
I was in Band so during Football season I was at the game. Throughout the rest of the year just hanging out with friends. We didn't have a particular hang out - we weren't part of the Del Taco crowd. Perhaps because my hair wasn't blond enough or maybe it was the fact I didn't drink? Either way we came up with our own stuff and had a great time.

Were you considered a flirt?
I'm sure I was considered a flirt. I had a lot of boyfriends during highschool. Of course my flirting really came to view at Rick's College- my mom probably should have sent me to a convent instead. LOL

Were you in the band, orchestra, or choir?
I was in band and I played the flute & piccolo. The choir was full of really snotty and not so nice girls. We shared a dressing room with them in the band room and it was always a bit shocking to hear their weekend stories. I'm not a prude but these girls were crass.

Were you a nerd?
Some of you will say that since I was in band I WAS a nerd. Let me tell you this was not true. Even in a group like band there is a division between those who are in band and the nerd hurd. I was not part of the nerd hurd.

Who was your favorite teacher?
I don't think I had a favorite. There was Mr. Sims who would point his finger and shake it at you and his whole head would turn red. Mrs. Sims who wouldn't let you chew gum and insisted you say BeCAUSE instead of becuz. Then there was Mr. Ashby - he taught drivers ed. Wait - it wasn't him that I liked - but I did date his son. He would quiz me about the days assignments when I would call their house before he would let me talk to Dave. And yes, I got an A in drivers ed.

What was your school mascot?
A Tiller. This is the classic mascot picture but we used a better one when I was in school. But really - how exciting can you make a tiller? It seems even more strange now - seeing as the school is smack dab in the middle of Orange County and all that could be tilled is now gone.

Did you go to the Prom?
Yes, I went to my Junior Prom with my boyfriend Pete. The theme was "The Best of Times" - yes from the Styx song. It was really the best of times - at least when it comes to highschool. My Senior year I went to prom with my friend Brendan. Pete and I were still dating off and on and Brendan actually had a girlfriend as well but we decided to go together. Actually, there was a point I didn't have a date and a guy in my English class made up a silly application saying he was going to try to find me a date. Brendan sat behind me in English and must have felt pity on me. We had a great time.

Did you have a job your senior year?
Yes. I started my first job the day after I turned 16. I worked at Souplantation. After that I worked as a file clerk at an insurance company. My senior year I finished school at noon so a group of us-including Brendan-went to Round Table Pizza every single day for a slice of pizza and a coke and then we went to work at our various jobs.

Did you go to school with anyone who is now famous?
Yes. I went to school with Shawn Green he sat next to me in that English class where my prom date application was written.

Did you go on a Senior Trip? I added this one - so yes. When I was a senior our basketball team went to state. The game was in Oakland and Stefani's uncle lived in Oakland so we all convinced our parents that they should let us go. It was Stefani, Lori and I. Stefani's Uncle is actually a priest so we headed off to Oakland to spend the weekend with Father John. I guess the idea of 3 teenage girls scared off the other priests at the rectory so we had Uncle John's apartment to ourselves and he used another room. In my sick sense of humor I have been known to joke that I have in fact slept in a priests bed.

He had plans to take us to San Franciso and said that 2 sister's from his congregation would be going with us. OH MY - how fun can San Francisco be with a priest and 2 nuns? Kate and Maggie showed up before our trip and they got a real kick out of the idea that we had assumed they were nuns when in fact they were SISTERS - as in blood related, biological, sisters. LOL

Have you gone to a class reunion?
No. I didn't really have a lot of friends from my class. Most of my friends were either a year older or a year younger. I suppose I may go to my 20th but that is a few years off still.

About Me meme

I'm off to the Teapottery today but thought I would post this meme I saw on another blog.

What zodiac sign are you? Aries

Do you regularly read a horoscope? No – but when I was about 10 I was obsessed with horoscopes.

If not, why not? I don’t have time and I don’t “believe” it like I did when I was 10.

Married or single? Married – 14 ½ years – yes since I was 19.

What do you like to do with your spare time? Things like this. LOL Also, reading, watching tv, hanging out with the family.

Is your life worse, better or about the same as you imagined it would be someday? Definitely not worse – sometimes it is just different than I had imagined but it’s all good.

Is your family larger or smaller than you expected? At one time I wanted 5 kids – hubby made me compromise with 3.

What do you collect? Thimbles from all the places I’ve been. I collect snow globes for Jordan. I also have a fairly large Disney Winnie the Pooh beanie collection.

What are three major turning points in your life? Graduating from college, getting married, having children.

What do you think your greatest talents are? I am a great teacher – wow that’s humble isn’t it. Let me clarify I am a great teacher for those that are 18 and under. Right now my specialty is Sunday School.

What do you think your greatest weaknesses are? I am sure that I don’t have any real friends here in England. I have convinced myself that I am not “church friend” material. I also get frustrated with my children a bit to easily.

What books have affected you the most? John Steinbeck’s The Red Pony – this was the first book that made me cry that actually brought reading to life for me. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby – I decided after I read this in 9th grade I was going to name my daughter Jordan and 15 years later I did. I also loved Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible and my list could go on and on. But there – one book from childhood, one from highschool and one I read as an adult – that should suffice.

Are you left- or right- brained? Right

What magazines do you subscribe to, if any? People Magazine and 2 church magazines – The Ensign and The Friend.

What’s playing on your C.D. player right now? Currently on my Ipod was Hannah Montana as I was taking the children to school. Yesterday I had it on shuffle and you name it it was there.

What are some of your accomplishment you’re most proud of? Graduating from college and teaching for 3 years. My oldest son is 10 but so far I can say that I’ve raised some pretty good kids.

What are some things you still want to accomplish? I am in a rut right now and I can’t actually think of what I would like to do. I enjoy staying at home with my children and I hope that I will be able to raise them all in a way that they make the correct choices as they grow up.

What kind of athletic activity do you like? I do not do anything athletic. I attempted skiing this past February in Germany. I made it through the 3 hour ski school class but that was enough for me. As far as my children – we encourage Jackson to play basketball – we are fair weathered sports fans and he is a good ball player. They all enjoyed skiing this last year as well so we will probably continue with that and I can get a lot of reading in during the week. Nothing like a ski lodge and a good book.

Thursday Thirteen #2

#2 Thirteen Things In My Handbag

I've seen this one done asking what's in your purse but I had to wonder if I actually HAD 13 things in my handbag. I was in luck.

1. Wallet - it is difficult to find one small enough to fit in this purse yet large enough to hold 2 sets of currency.

2. Cell phone - yes, it's pink. I saw it at the carphone warehouse and that was that. I know it's a bit outdated now but I've never been the one to have the top of the line mobile.

3. Car keys - I have a key to my car, my house, and my bowling locker. No, I do not have a key to my husbands car.

4. Church keys - if I could only have a calling/job at church that didn't require me to have keys.

5. Receipts - My husband is the Quicken King - he is also anal retentive so yes, every receipt gets handed in and entered in to the computer. At least I don't need to get a purchase order prior to my shopping.

6. Inhaler - Any parent of a child with asthma should have the same in their bag.

7. Mini Twix - You never know when you'll need a bit of chocolate.

8. Bank Card - for some reason this was in the side pocket instead of my wallet - no clue as to why but it worked for giving me 13 things.

9. Ipod - My cell phone is pink, my Ipod is green - I didn't want to turn in to my mother in law who has to have everything matching. All colors deserve equal time.

10. Hair clip - My daughter is always in need of something to clip the hair out of her face.

11. Tissues - I've had a mix of allergies and a cold lately.

12. Pen - That is a Napolean Dynomite pen to be exact! On the side it says "There's a whole lot more where that came from..."

13. Lipstick - I don't even WEAR lipstick but it's in there. It's even a decent shade and brand - none of that cheap stuff. My mother drilled it in my head that I should always carry lipstick - guess that was more important then telling me I should wear it? It's in the box because I've found it deters little fingers from twisting the entire tube of lipstick in to the lid.

--I do notice a small piece of gum wrapper in the picture as well but that doesn't count as a whole #14 does it?

Thursday Thirteen

#1 Thirteen words I've had to learn since moving to England

It's not just the driving on the wrong side of the road that I've had to adjust to since moving here!!

1. Rubbish - can't we just call it trash?

2. Bin - the place where we put our rubbish. It's all rubbish to me.

3. Tip - Okay I'm on a roll with the rubbish but this is what we would call a dump. Not so much a landfill because it is just a parking lot full of dumpsters that you put the appropriate rubbish in.

4. Skip - Oh wait they aren't dumpsters - yep you guessed it.

5. Car Park - Ah hah! It is a parking lot.

6. Ring, to give someone a ring - I would prefer to just say I'm going to call you.

7. Mobile - more calling is done here but we Americans prefer cell phone.

8. Childminder - this is what Mel does - she's an in home daycare provider.

9. Non Iron - this one infuriates me because it took me 5 minutes to explain to a woman at the outlet mall that yes in fact when I say wrinkle free it means that I want a NON IRON shirt.

10. Chips/Crisps - I'll put these two together. Chips are French Fries and Crisps are Chips......are we running in circles yet?

11. Jacket Potato - just your averaged baked potato, however they have no russett potatoes in all of England and this is hardly acceptable when your husband is from Idaho!

12. Plaster - It's a freaking band-aid people. It isn't even made of plaster so how does that even make sense?

13. Biscuit - a biscuit is a cookie, I'm not sure what they call a biscuit - in fact I don't think I've ever seen a proper biscuit since I've been here.

And this concludes my Thursday 13 - we'll ignore the whole Mom/Mum thing because I've done that already.

A-Z's of K-12

Apple Jacks or Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries? Um, where's the fruit loops option?

Band or choir? Band geek all the way - I played the flute.

Class ring? Only one I ever wore belonged to a boy.....

Ducks or Battleships? I guess Battleship even though I sucked at it and my brother won everytime.

Earning money? Started my first job at Souplantation the day after my 16th birthday.

Favorite teacher? Couldn't say - mostly the ones that inspired me only did so because I decided I could do a better job of it and that's why I decided to become a teacher.

Go back and do over? Some of it, yep!! For the most part glad it is all over.

Home Economics? I was a member of FHA. Guessed it yet? Future Homemakers of America. I never did show up for that yearbook picture though.

Indoor recess? P.E.? I have a bad knee and always managed to get that note that excused me from PE.

Jacks or jump rope? Cinderella dressed in yella went up stairs to kiss a fella. Jump rope ruled!

Kickball or dodge ball? Kickball - less likely to get hit by the ball there.

Lunchbox? If you consider a brown paper sack a lunchbox then, YES.

Musical? I was in the band and the one highschool musical we did do I was in the pit. It was a lame little musical called "Rock On"

Number of school districts? 2 - 1 for elementary school then we moved from Oregon to California and finished my school there.

Orange or apple? Granny Smith is my all time fave - now if you have a bit of caramel dip........

Playground equipment? Monkey bars.

Quiz team or debate team? Quiz team would have been more my speed but I don't know if my school offered either of them.

Spring break? Two other girls and I went to San Francisco for the weekend once when the highschool basketball team made State - was a great excuse to go have fun!!

Team sports? Kind of hard when you're in the marching band - but I did letter......in band.

Unfullfilled dream? I should have kissed my prom date!!

Valuable? I think education is.

Walk or bus? I walked the majority of the time. Only took the bus for my 7th grade year. Living close to the school is definitely better! Then I got a car and that was the end of that. Wait I never walked home in highschool I always found "some boy" to give me a ride home.

X Country or basketball? Did I mention the bad knee and band? My brother ran X Country but if I were to pick a favorite to watch it would be basketball - my 9 year old plays and he's got some great potential!

Year? 1991

ZZZs? I don't remember every falling asleep in class. The whole drooling phobia or the red mark on the forehead.....not something I ever wanted to try to live down.

Okay, anyone else want to play along?
